Lookism

Lookism is a devised theatre work that examines contemporary beauty standards and the social violence embedded in appearance-based discrimination. The performance centers on how external judgment shapes identity, behavior, and self-worth, asking audiences to confront the ways they participate in and perpetuate visual hierarchies.

At the center of the staging was a mirrored film installation laid across the floor, which refracted light onto the performers’ bodies and the audience. As the performers moved, the fragmented reflections created a shifting landscape where bodies were distorted, multiplied, or erased, allowing the audience to physically sense how beauty norms destabilize perception. This interplay of light, reflection, and movement functioned as the dramaturgical core rather than a visual effect, guiding viewers to experience the theme rather than simply observe it.
