Artist statement

Theatre is a space where audiences and artists embody questions together.

I believe theatre must take forms that allow audiences to sense as deeply as possible. Whether a work requires narrative structure or experimental openness, I begin from the essence of the story and choose the form that reveals its truth most vividly.

My aim is to expand perception and create moments where sensation and imagination come alive.

I create works that encourage people to look again at each other’s emotions and experiences, exploring social questions through sensory and reflective processes. I move fluidly between classical and unconventional structures depending on what each story requires, seeking theatre that helps audiences engage more deeply with the world.

I draw inspiration from classical texts, historical events, and collective memories that continue to resonate beneath the surface of the present. By reimagining these inherited narratives through contemporary forms, I explore how the past can speak anew on today’s stage. In weaving multiple voices across cultures, languages, and generations, I seek to show how tradition can evolve, how difference can become a bridge rather than a boundary, and how unheard voices can find resonance within a shared space of empathy.

My rehearsal practice has been shaped by working with leading figures in contemporary Korean theatre, including Oh Kyung-taek and Lee Gon. From them, I absorbed a rigorous approach to structure, a deep attentiveness to actors, and a way of viewing rehearsal as a space of ongoing inquiry rather than a fixed procedure. These influences do not define my work but expand the questions I ask and the methods I pursue as I continue developing my own artistic language. My practice is further enriched by the actor-centered, physically grounded training I received under Director Kim Jung at the Doosan Art School Creative Workshop.

I view theatre as a sustainable ecosystem, a living organism in which people, space, emotion, and technology coexist. With this belief, I continue to ask questions, collaborate across disciplines and borders, and reimagine both classical and new texts through the language of the present.
